Goals Goals Goals

Before I get to the post, just wanted to remind you guys that I'm running a contest! Click HERE if you're interested in winning a copy of Girl of Nightmares.

I've had a few goals set  this year. One of which was to start querying Fire and Ice before the end of 2012...that doesn't look like it's going to happen. But I'm actually at peace with it. Mainly because I know the work I'm putting into it is going to give me a greater chance of interest than if I sent it out now.

Usually when I can't check a goal off my list, I find it rather defeating. It's natural for us to be our number one critics. We're hard on ourselves because we know more than anyone else what we're capable of. But sometimes, no matter how hard you try, a certain goal can't be attained within the allotted time you set for yourself. That's why I'm thinking I shouldn't set BIG goals, like querying, within a time frame.

There are other goals on my list I have accomplished that I'm pretty happy about, but there are a couple I'm putting on the back burner for now. What about you guys? Any goals you haven't been able to check off? How did you feel about it?

  1. You are right -- putting the time and effort into making your manuscript stronger, even if that means pushing of querying for a bit, is absolutely worthwhile.

There are plenty of goals I haven't achieved yet, but I refuse to give up on them, rather I just need to adjust my time frame a bit :)

  2. I'm sort of the poster-child of not checking off goals, mainly because I'm also the poster-child of procrastination ;)

That being said, I was going to try and have the second draft of my WIP finished by Thanksgiving, which isn't gonna happen. But it'll be better for it, I think.

  3. Totally! Oh man... priorities... we are so hard on ourselves... which can be good and bad... I totally feel this post though!

  4. We are too hard on ourselves. Certainly if you are making your MS stronger for when you do send it out, that sounds like a great goal change to me, don't be hard on yourself!

  5. If it's not ready, it's not ready. Not much you can do about it. Try not to feel bad. Maybe 2013 is going to be a good year for you.

  6. Don't feel bad! You are a talented writer and all the pieces are there for Fire & Ice, it is just a matter of putting them in the right order! It will pay off! :)

  7. There's always the next year to begin querying a novel! And it sounds like you're working hard on making it the best it can be. :)

  8. Good for you for recognizing that the timing isn't right! It's a tough decision, but it'll be so worth it in the end! Good luck!

  9. Yep, I've also learned that sometimes goals just need to be reassessed--and there's nothing wrong with that :)
