Comfort Reading

Whenever the leaves start to change and the chill in the wind starts picking up, I feel a need to pull out some of my favorites and re-read them. Maybe it's the shorter days with looming darkness that fill me with a need to wrap myself in a blanket by a fire and read something comforting.
I think it's the leaves that get to me.

I firmly believe in rereading books you love. I do it every year during the fall. Some of my favorites include the Seven Waters trilogy by Juliet Marillier, Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion by Jane Austen, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and Tithe by Holly Black. Reading these old favorites takes me back to when I first read them and make life seem simpler somehow, because although many things have changed since then, they haven't. What about you guys, are there any books you enjoy rereading for comfort? And do you find that the fall season holds that same sort of nostalgia for you that it does for me?

  1. I'm a huge fan of re-reading my favorites. I love Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier. And every January is my Jane Austen month, I re-read one or two of her books each January. Two other books I never tire of are Keturah and Lord Death (I'll be giving away a few copies of those in the next few months on my blog) by Martine Leavitt, and The Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale.

  3. So true. I re-read a lot of books , especially poetry but fiction, too. I'll have to try Tithe. Missed that one, somehow.

  5. I re-read whatever is on my childhood bookshelf---weird but true. You're so right about fall bringing a sense of nostalgia. Hope you're staying warm :)

  7. I love fall. The leaves are one of my favorite parts of the season, too. :) One of my comfort reads is Fire by Kristin Cashore; it's the companion to Graceling that Emily mentioned above.

  8. I read a lot this time of year, but my comfort reading is nearly anything with a romance because I'm kind of a sap. I love Graceling and Fire! Emily has good taste.
