Personally, I don't think there is a wrong way to write. But I've heard or read in other places that you should treat writing just like any other job. Set a schedule from 9-5, or whatever works for you, and go at it. This may be feasible for some, but not at all for me. And not for other writers who have other full-time jobs either in or out of the home (yes, stay at home mom is a job). Honestly, I'm kind of glad writing isn't a full-time gig, because for me, treating it as a job might take some of that magic away. There are times when days will pass and I won't get more than a few minutes here and there to make that magic work, and I sort of wish it was a job, but more the most part I love having freedom and flexibility in my writing schedule. And I wouldn't trade having my kids around driving me nuts for anything.
However, with all that said, I do look forward to the day when I have deadlines to meet because that means I accomplished one of my goals, but until then I'll enjoy the sweetness of setting my own schedule, or lack of one. What about you guys, is writing your full-time job, or do you just have a specific time you try to write, or are you like me and just fit it anywhere?
Love this: "I'm kind of glad writing isn't a full-time gig, because for me, treating it as a job might take some of that magic away."
ReplyDeleteTrue for me too. :) BUT I am going to be a semi-full time writer next year. Making my own schedule and not having to squeeze in 20 minutes here and there will be NICE.
Have a great week!
Oooh, I'm excited for your semi-full status next year! That's awesome!
DeleteI fit my writing in whenever I can. I'm not sure how I'll do when I have deadlines. I'm sure I'll meet them, but it's kind of nice not having them right now. :)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Life is so crazy sometimes it's hard to imagine having deadlines on top of all of it, but it's also exciting.
DeleteDeadlines will be hard and wonderful at the same time. I have to squeeze writing time in whenever I can. Mom, work, plus school and writing! I love it though and the most important part is that we never give up!
ReplyDeleteYup, I think there will be some hair-pulling days and some blissful, fulfilling kind of days, both will involve chocolate in some way.
DeleteDeadlines are good for me, because otherwise I tend to procrastinate. :) But either way I don't write every day. With four kids and a million things going on all the time, I'm with you, it's just not always possible. Maybe someday, when all my kids are in school, I can devote more time to it. Until then, I will sneak in any time I can. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's great they work for you. I'm also a procrastinator and I think they'll help me out on those days I just stare at my twitter feed.
DeleteI have good and bad days writing, too. Even with no deadlines from an editor, I usually self-impose deadlines and that helps to get butt in chair.
