What's Up Wednesday

Wow it feels like forever since I took part in one of these. I've missed everyone!

What I'm Reading:
I recently finished Swimming to Tokyo by Brenda St. John and really loved it. I thought it was a unique premise and I loved the location. And the romance was sizzling. I'm currently working on Reclaimed by Sarah Guillory which is definitely interesting thus far. Also I downloaded The Gateway Through Which They Came by Heather Marie and I'm super excited about it.

What I'm Writing:
I got in 1k so far this week. Not much, but I'm in the middle of revising Fading again. I got some requests which ultimately turned into Rs after querying and decided I needed to go over my manuscript one more time. I got some great feedback from some fabulous readers and am working on those. My goal is to revise the first fifty pages this week.

What Works For Me:
Stepping back after receiving critiques. I give myself a day to wrap my head around everything before jumping right into them. Maybe even more than a day. And I also ask myself if I agree with them, because if I don't then I'm unwilling to go and do the work to fix up whatever it is that needs to be fixed.

What Else I've Been Up To:
We spent Christmas in LA with my dad and though it was fun, I'm so glad to be home. But I now need a vacation from my children. Two weeks straight in a tiny apartment with all four of them just about drove me to madness. Also, I'm finding myself fall more in love with the writing community. It's so nice to be around such supportive, awesome, lovely people.

What's Up With You?

  1. Great feedback on your WiP is definitely a great motivator, isn't it? Good luck with your revisions this week! I think you mentioned something important about critiques: that you have to agree with them in order to the do the work. Ultimately, you're the one who knows the characters and knows the story, so it always has to come down to that. Still, it's really nice to have people weigh in and sometimes provide a perspective that you hadn't thought of before. That's what I find, anyway. Hope you're having a great week, Prerna! :D

  3. Sitting on feedback can be the best way to make the best use of it, rather than rushing straight into revisions.

Glad you had a good Christmas in LA.

    Have a great week!

  4. I think it's great that you process feedback first before making drastic changes and also that you trust yourself enough not to make certain changes that are suggested. It's your story, so ultimately you've gotta go with your gut! Good luck working on those revisions! :)

  5. Best of luck with those revisions! I find stepping back is a good way to process the feedback before diving into revising.

  6. Stepping back works for me too. Usually a good week or so after I receive my critiques I dive back into revisions. Not too far removed, but far enough. :) Best of luck with all things writing and revising!

  7. I haven't heard of any of those books, but they sound awesome--I think I might go check them out right now! I agree that it's important to not make changes willynilly after receiving a critique (if I could just convince my writing partners about that...) I hope you have a great week!

  8. I can really relate to the stepping back after critiques thing. I always rush into them, but I'm starting to wonder if I need to let the ideas settle in my head first to see if they really stick. Sometimes I'm so eager to make the work better that I think I compromise what I want from the story as a result. It's a fine line.

Have a great week and good luck with your revisions!
