What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up, put on by Jamie Morrow and Erin Funk. If you'd like to join click on the links above!

What I'm Reading:
The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour. I'm halfway through and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. Not totally in love, but it's a great, well written story. I'm curious to find out why Bev changed her mind about traveling the world with Colby and how things will end (or begin) for Colby. One thing I do love is reading about the obscure towns they visit on their tour, and the characters they meet in passing that have a more significant impact on them than people they've known their whole lives. I also finished Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas yesterday and really liked that as well (not love, yet again). It's a great fantasy, which I needed after a string of contemporaries (nothing against contemporaries, i love them, but I need to switch it up every now and then). I have to say I enjoyed the sequel more than Throne of Glass, not only was the writing stronger, but the plot twists had my head spinning.

What I'm Writing:
NaNoWriMo! I'm just over 8,000 words in. I'm kind of not feeling the story right now. There are scenes I can't wait to get to, but I have to figure out the beginning first, and the writing is really 'meh', even for a first draft. I'm not giving up, though, because I'm really excited about the stuff that's going to come up, I just have to start it with a bang as well. I guess that's what revisions are for.

What Inspires Me Right Now:
NaNoWriMo. I love knowing I"m not the only one trying to get words on paper (or computers) especially SO MANY of them in such a short amount of time. Makes me feel less crazy and more motivated.

What Else I've Been Up To:
Reading. I have so many great books from the library right now and trying to read and NaNo together is near impossible. Not to mention taking care of a family and house. But I love all those things (minus housework) so I make sure to find time to fit everything in. I don't always succeed, but when I do, man does it feel good.

What Have You Been Up To?

  1. NaNo has swallowed me whole this week, it's about all I've been doing! I'm really enjoying my story, but I'm waiting for that inevitable moment where I get stuck and lose motivation. Hopefully it doesn't happen any time soon! Good luck getting through your story :)

  2. I adore THE DISENCHANTMENTS. Colby is such a sweetheart. I went to a signing right after it came out and Nina LaCour talked all about her road trip research and her writing process. It was fascinating. :-) Best of luck with NaNo this month. I'm cheering you on, Prerna!

    1. I really enjoyed Colby's perspective! Jealous you got to hear about Nina LaCour's road trip research, I would love to learn more about it. Especially because all those towns were my favorite part of the book.

  3. Six days into NaNo and already at 8,000 words? Excellent, Prerna! I hope you can keep going like this, even if you're not "into" it at the moment. This is first draft, so plow on through. You can fix all this in revisions, when you have a better sense of the whole scope of your story. Hopefully by the end, you'll know how to make the "meh" parts great. All the best to you! :)

  5. Who needs housework anyway?
Yay to your 8000! And don't worry about it being *meh*. It's probably not as bad as you think. Besides, 1st drafts are made for revising.

  7. Hi Prerna,
You can always jump ahead and write those scenes. That's something I learned from the writer Chuck Wendig. Hey, we're the creators, right? Well, maybe jumping ahead can spur on another subplot or reveal something else you may not have thought of when writing in a linear fashion.

    Just a thought.

I've heard good things about the Sarah J. Maas books. I'll have to add them to the Tower of Books.

    Good luck with your writing!

    1. I should give that a try. There are a couple of scenes I'm itching to write. Definitely check out Sarah J. Maas, she's a very talented author.

  8. I'm at around 8000 words of NaNo, too. Hope you get into it soon! NaNo is definitely a great motivator to get the draft done, even if you have to do a lot of revision later. :)

  10. I'm always juggling family, house, writing, reading and every other thing I can do. But by the end of the week, I find time for all my loves. And don't worry about your draft not being that good, "first drafts suck," Libba Bray says so. If hers suck then you know ours does too! Over time they suck less, I like to think! Good luck with NaNo! Write write write!

  11. WOW!!! 8K is AWESOME!!! And even if the words feel meh, the important thing is to just get them down. Keep going! You can do it!

  12. Good luck with your NaNo, Prerna!! I was too chicken to try it this year, though I've been thinking about it for a while. But I do have a new story idea which I'm about to start, so at least I'll be writing :). Hope you have a great week!
